Employment and Labor Laws: Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC
VIRGINIA:
Current Minimum Wage:
- $12.41 per hour, effective January 1, 2025
- Escalation Schedule:
- A proposed bill (HB1928) aimed to incrementally raise the minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by January 1, 2027. Unfortunately, the bill was vetoed by Governor Glenn Youngkin.
MARYLAND:
Current Minimum Wage: $15.00 per hour statewide
- Escalation Schedule:
- Starting July 1, 2025, the minimum wage will be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), rounded to the nearest $0.05.
- Local:
- Montgomery County: Effective July 1, 2025
- Employers with 51 or more employees: $17.65 per hour
- Employers with 11-50 employees: $16.00 per hour
- Montgomery County: Effective July 1, 2025
Washington DC:
Current Minimum Wage:
- $17.50 per hour for all workers
- $10.00 per hour for tipped employees.
Upcoming Changes:
- Effective July 1, 2025
- Minimum wage will increase to $18.00 per hour
- Tipped employees will rise to $12.00 per hour
